Belarus views Libya as “a close friend and partner with whom we are ready to have a dialogue on any matters,” Alyaksandr Lukashenka said at Monday’s talks with visiting Libyan leader Muammar Abu Minyar al-Qadhafi in Minsk.
Mr. Lukashenka described Mr. Qadhafi’s visit as another confirmation of “truly friendly relations” between Belarus and Libya. “Belarusian-Libyan ties are traditionally built on the basis of mutual trust. Belarus proved its support of Libya in deed during the most difficult times for the Libyan people,” he said.
He stressed that Minsk was ready to provide “necessary assistance” to Libya in the future.
Mr. Lukashenka expressed gratitude to the Libyan leader for the African country’s support offered to Belarus in the international arena. “We have uniform approaches to the establishment of a fair multi-polar world,” he said.
The Belarusian leader expressed certainty that Mr. Qadhafi’s visit would give a “new powerful impetus to mutually beneficial cooperation in all spheres.” “I believe that members of your delegation will hold talks today for the sake of the development of our agreements and will manage to have certain matters discussed in detail and come out with specific proposals by the end of the day,” he said.
Mr. Qadhafi, for his part, thanked Minsk for supporting Libya during a period of tough international sanctions and described the purpose of his trip as “advancing our relations further so that they develop actively in the future.”
Mr. Qadhafi invited Mr. Lukashenka to visit Libya and the Belarusian leader accepted the invitation.
